In Deal With G.O.P., Portent for Next 2 Years

I thought that this was interesting, especially for the people who are doing their papers on liberalism and conservatism. It states that Obama is "willing to alienate his liberal base in the interest of compromise". What will this mean for liberalism?

President Obama has been placed in a difficult situation, where any action on his part can and will be severely criticized by one given group. In this case, his efforts to forge compromise with Republicans on tax cuts are being denounced by the Democratic Party. If Obama had not made the compromise, some Americans would have lambasted him for refusal to exercise bipartisanship. Where he is on such thin ice politically, it seems like any Obama initiative will be met with significant opposition. One thing is for certain: if he is unable to retain the support of his own party, he will not fair well in the next presidential election. His recent tax cut compromise with Republicans will not help him in that department.
