Fixing the filibuster

The abuse of the filibuster is probably one of the most selfish, partisan and pathetic actions I have ever seen in legislative history. There is virtually no reason that it needs to be done, it is just the action of an obstinate and obstructionist minority that would rather die than see the President's legislation succeed or people ,heaven for bid, were to receive their extension of unemployment benefits. (Which unlike what some people at Fox News might say, is actually very stimulative of the economy because these people are rapidly spending the money that was just given to them by the government) Just as the author said, we need to return to the old days where the person holding the filibuster actually needs to stick it out for the whole time like Jefferson Smith in Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. Either that or the number of Senators in the room could be changed from 60 to 55 or even 51, thereby bringing back majority rule to the Senate. It is not as if the people who are using the filibuster are objecting on a realistic and well thought out basis it just a way to gum up the system. Hundreds of well qualified people that would become a part of the government are being stopped that privilege just because the opposition feels like it. And just because someone feels like it is never a reason to stop the people's work in Washington. Something needs to be done to fix this immediately.
