The White House is making a national statement about environmental activism through a local installation of Solar Panels on the White House roof. Steve Hayward believes that local environmental organizations produce more efficient environmental progress than national organizations. "Putting solar on the roof of the nation's most important home is a powerful symbol" calling all Americans to realize that they can create energy through direct and personal means.

I read somewhere that some in White House had been reluctant to do this, not wanting to inspire comparisons with Jimmy Carter, who first had panels installed.

Although this is an important symbolic gesture, I think the White House is making a much stronger statement with its recent approval of plans to build solar power plants on public lands in California. We can still push forward with alternative energy solutions even if environmental legislation is failing in Congress.
