I saw a link to “The Rent Is Too Damn High” on my brother’s Facebook this afternoon, and I spent about fifteen minutes bent over, laughing. At first, I thought the whole idea was completely ridiculous. It seemed to me that Jimmy McMillan was making a mockery out of the New York gubernatorial race. His decision to run, however, represents the fundamental right of Americans to spread their ideals through elections, despite being a long shot to win. Although his methods may be unorthodox, McMillan exhibits a passionate voice desiring significant change for the poor and disadvantaged. Eccentric public figures such as McMillan have the potential to spark grassroots movements, which have become a mainstay in the current political climate.
